→ Background
• Born in a small village to two onmyouji of moderate fame.
• When he was seven, both of his parents were killed while out on a job.
• He was taken in and raised by a Jorougumo named Shio, who owed a debt to his mother.
• Shio and Atsushi lived on the outskirts of a human city, which doubled as Shio's hunting grounds. Despite their close proximity to human civilization, Atsushi spent most of his childhood steeped in youkai society.
• When Atsushi was 12, Shio was tracked down and attacked by an onmyouji named Yamamoto. Atsushi intervened to help, but the two of them were easily overpowered.
• However, Yamamoto felt that Atsushi's skills and power could be nurtured into something greater and cut him a deal: if he came to the capital to train as an onmyouji, Shio would be forced to leave the area, but allowed to live. Atsushi agreed.
• For the next seven years, he was raised and trained among other aspiring onmyouji. Though a skilled and affable student, the slight disconnect he felt from human society meant he rarely felt close to his peers.
• Atsushi was a quick learner of above average spiritual power, but his extensive first-hand experience with numerous youkai meant he was able to handle jobs considered above his skill level.
• After ten years of service, Atsushi's skills were recognized and he was inducted as an onmyouji in direct service to the Imperial Family. He neither liked nor wanted this role, but felt forced to accept it.

→ Personality
Atsushi is an intelligent, calm, and affable person. His slow temper (and lack of investment in other people) means he finds it easy to get along even with abrasive individuals.
However, his friendly behavior belies his aloof, bitter nature, as well as the fact that he considers himself somewhat distant from other people. Atsushi would like nothing better than to retire to the city outskirts or a remote village, like the areas he grew up in, and resents that his position requires him to spend most of his time in the capital. He's a fairly lonely person, and also unaware of how lonely he is.
That said, while Atsushi can be uncaring on a personal level, he's not cruel and takes his job seriously. He consider his unique insight on both human and youkai culture to be a gift, and believes it's his duty to ensure that the two societies coexist as peacefully as possible. As he's well paid by the Imperial Family, he often gives free charms and talismans to villages troubled by spirits.
Atsushi has a slightly mean sense of humor. He draws a great deal of amusement out of not explaining himself properly, withholding information, gently teasing acquaintances, and otherwise engaging in mild but odd or alarming behavior, like handling spiders with his bare hands.
Other Notes
• Atsushi has an affinity for spiders. He has several spells that allow him to speak to, control, and spy on others via spiders; he can easily handle even aggressive species with his bare hands; and his shikigami most commonly take the form of spiders.
• He prefers the company of children and animals, mortal or youkai, over that of nearly anyone else.
• He and Shio stay in contact.
• Atsushi draws and plays the shamisen, but if asked he would say he doesn't have hobbies.
• Thanks to Shio, he takes very good care of his hair and prefers wearing it long. It was cut off to above his shoulders when he was first sent to train as an onmyouji, but he fought against it so hard that he was allowed to grow it out again after that.
